7 time-saving tips for Instagram to make every minute productive

Are you fed up of losing time on the Insta-Scroll?

Do you hop onto Instagram for a quick look at the latest posts and then the next time you look up you realise you’ve lost 45 minutes of your life and have nothing to show for it? If this sounds familiar my top time-saving tips for Instagram will help you turn that trend around so you can make your time on Instagram actually work for your business.

But first I’ll let you into a little secret… it happens to us all, even me, you are not alone!

We need to go on Instagram because that’s where our businesses and customers are, but it’s so easy to get lost down rabbit holes of delicious cakes, shiny trinkets and colourful stationery (or is that just me?!)

So what can we do about it?

1. Set time limits

In your settings, you can find your daily average time on Instagram (it’s hard reading, be brave!) But the really cool thing is that in this section you can also set yourself a daily reminder to get off Instagram. You can select how long you want to spend on Instagram, set your time limit, and when you reach it you will be notified. Good right?!

Set yourself a realistic time limit that will let you achieve everything you need to do with bonus added scrolling time on top.

2. Stop re-doing your Stories

This is a BIG time waster. How many times does it take you to say what you need to say in a way that you are happy with? Do you get so frustrated that it’s not quite right, that sometimes you don’t even end up posting anything at all?

I’m going to let you into a little secret – you don’t look or sound the same to us as you do to yourself. Be kind to yourself, if you stumble just repeat yourself. Everyone is human, we all trip over our words sometimes and what seems like a big deal to you, I promise won’t even be noticeable to anyone else.

How can you get it right the first time?

  • Write down the key points you don’t want to forget and put it next to the camera
  • Practice first for one time and add any extra points that come up to the notes you have written
  • Give yourself 2 or 3 attempts maximum, but you have to post the 3rd attempt regardless (so make it an incentive to nail it the first time)

3. Go Live

This is an awesome time-saver and an amazing way to add value to your community at the same time. There is no faffing with adding captions, you can answer people’s questions there and then, and there are no retakes.

4. Be intentional with your engagement

This is an important one and it’s one of the key components to building your engaged community so you do need to schedule time for this daily. But there are ways you can help yourself be intentional so you aren’t just endlessly scrolling and wasting time.

Make an engagement action plan and stick to it. Set yourself achievable goals (5 of each action for example) and do the most important actions first. Remember to focus on the people you are trying to engage within your audience, don’t comment on friends and family during this activity as you’re wasting time and procrastinating.

5. Save posts of accounts you want to engage with into ‘collections’

This is a great time-saving trick if you are focussing on building a relationship with various different accounts. When you save grid posts, you are given the option to save the post to a collection. It’s worth creating a collection of posts from the people you are really focussing on building a relationship with so you can just go into it and easily access these accounts to engage with their latest posts.

6. Plan ahead

I’m afraid it’s an unavoidable technique for saving time, and it does really help you get focused on what you want to achieve on Instagram. Your planning can be thorough or it can be as simple as a rough plan to what you are posting each day, whipped up at the weekend for the following week. When you’re in the zone, planning like this is much easier than trying to come up with something on the fly every single day.

7. Use a scheduler

This may be an obvious one, but it is the one that will save you the most time. And you do need to commit to planning ahead and blocking off time to do this on a regular basis.

My top recommended scheduler for Instagram is Later because it’s a very visual tool, it’s an official Instagram approved partner and the functions it has on its free plan are perfect for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

You can schedule your posts to publish automatically without needing to do anything, and you can also set your stories to publish in advance as well (but you do need to post them via the app on your phone).
